I got this item because I needed a cheap sewing machine. I'm not going to be using it for doing miles of fabric. I just wanted a machine that I could use every once and a while for mending, hemming, and the occasional craft project.
I can tell you that this machine definitely delivered. It is very light, and I was worried that it might not be able to handle the things that I wanted to do. The first project was a medium weight fabric, and it worked like a charm. The next project I did was a throw pillow with piping. It went through all four layers of fabric with no problems and the presser foot can handle a 3/8 piping cord with no problems.
It sounds like a lot of the people that gave it a bad review just didn't take the time to read the instruction manual. It is different than a full size sewing machine.
It only has two speeds, and the on off switch is for manual mode when you aren't using the foot pedal. This is a great sewing machine for light duty/hobbyist/beginner type work or for the person who is on the fence about if sewing is a hobby that they really want to take up because it requires some commitment. The kit that comes with it is a huge bonus too!As long as you have fabric, you start sewing right out of the box. More than meets the eye. I thought this was a good product for beginners like me. I really had no idea what I was doing. I like form fitting shirts like Slim Fit.
Unfortunately I have a unique upper body shape that make most Slim Fit shirts, from many brands, fit awkwardly. My chest is 40" and waist is 31" (Male).Slim Fit shirts are made for smaller men, "Do you even lift". It was costing me a fortune to have all my regular fit shirt (because I gave up on slim fit) tailored to me. So I saw a sewing machine at Sears and bought it. I was surprised how easy it was to set up and use. It also came with a starter kit that contained a lot of things that I had no idea how to use. That changed really quick just from reading the instructions. Combined with that and a great deal of YouTube videos, I was altering my own shirts in less than a couple days. Granted they weren't perfect, but no one noticed.
Enough about my life story. This little thing was great to work with when I was getting started.
I wasn't even aware this was smaller than the average sewing machine until I got another one. The dimensions on Amazon describe the box, not the machine. The actual dimensions are about 12" H x 5.4" W x 10 D. It included a box of supplies over the regular starter kit (see product description). As a beginner this was very useful.I didn't use all the stitch patterns but the ones I did worked great. The only reason I'm taking a star is because it was too wide for cuffs and for hemming jeans and doesn't have a removable piece, like most full size machines, to fit in small round items.
I would recommend this to anyone who has no idea what they are doing, but wants to learn. Its cheep small and easy to use. 5.0 out of 5 stars. This sewing machine is very decent Not to big!
I know I'm not the most professional when it comes to sewing but this machine worked for me so far for everything I used it for hem's seam's etc. I tried almost all stitches and it worked perfect, light weight what else can I ask for..... It also came with a small but VERY useful sewing kit!!
3.0 out of 5 stars. You Get What You Pay For. So my mom bought me this sewing machine for Christmas after I lamented about how I don't have a sewing machine I used to sew when I still lived at home many, many moons ago. This is obviously a budget machine (the price tells you everything)so I didn't expect much going into it.I left it in the box for almost a year, but it worked the second I started it up. I leave mine in "Off" and control the sewing completely with the pedal. Speaking of the pedal, the thing is cheap plastic and weighs maybe 6 ounces. It will stay in the same spot if you keep your foot hovered over it on carpet, but I could imagine using the pedal on hard flooring might be annoying. Also, pretty much everything that comes in the accessory kit, and the sewing needles, are garbage. The thread that comes with it shreds in the tensioner (on the lightest tension) and the eyes of the needles will shred your good thread. Using my own needles and thread, this machine sews pretty well. I won't be making any designer pieces with it, but I did make a fleece robe for my six-month-old to wear for Halloween, and it did great, even sewing over thick seams. This little machine will certainly serve me well while I can save for one of its sleaker, higher-quality big brothers.
