The Model 201-2 became Singers the best domestic sewing machine at all the time and has been primarily bought by professional seamstresses who would sew for a living. More than 85 years later all professional sewers who understand the true value of sewing machines are still looking for these reliable models.
Singer 201 is pretty much a bullet proof. The production has began in 1934 and ran for nearly three decades. There are 9 different modifications of 201 Singer model has been made. 201 - made in 1935-64 Horizontal rotary hook; side drop- in bobbin; rotary hook. 201 K (Kilbowie, Scotland)1934-81.Same as as 201 but in 1960 started to make them out of aluminum alloy. 201-1 1935 Horizontal rotary hook; with reverse. 201-2 1936 Horizontal rotary hook, with reverse. Potted motor; internal gear driven. 201-3 Horizontal rotary hook, with reverse.
201K3 1935-54 Horizontal rotary hook; with reverse; cast iron body; external motor. 201-4 Rotary hook, with reverse.201K-21 Aluminium alloy body , parts -steel , New' shape body. Horizontal rotary hook; reverse feed. The early 201 has been made out of cast iron and weight 29 LBS, but by the very end of 1950's Singer also produced an aluminium alloy version to reduce weight , but those lighter weights has lost a lot of punching-through power. In 1963 the manufacturing of the finest sewing machine in the world has been ceased due to the very high production cost.
Unfortunately , It was the end of the best Singer machine ever made. When you see 201 model made before end of the 1950th in complete assembly, being professionally serviced and in good cosmetic condition just grab it as fast as you can. There are not too many of them left over.
Singer's Elizabethport, New Jersey plant. Four months later, in February 1942 another badge of 10.000 model 201 machines has been produced and after that the production of 201 models has been stopped because of beginning of WWII. Only in April 1946 another 10K models has been produced.But they came with striated face plate and thinner layer chrome plating. Has all steel construction and the heavy duty oscillating shuttle hook.
The hinged pressure foot clearance of 7/16 in combination with large and heavy counterweight and mentioned above all steel construction allows to sew very easily heavy layers of denim, canvas, belts and numerous layers of leather. That you would ever need even more power than this Singer 201-2 effortlessly provides, then the next step for you would be the top of the line walking-foot-needle-fed heavy duty industrial machine. This model 201 is one of three. Most desirable vintage Singers sewing machines : Surprisingly , # 1 is Featherweights (221/222), but from the technical characteristics and sewing capabilities stand point FW is not even close to be in the same league as Singer models 201-2.The Featherweights are just very cute little machine and became a cult item because they are lightweight and portable to carry them to quilting shops. The 201 machine are full-size, heavy-duty, high-quality construction and stitching and extremely reliable. This machine has been completely taken apart all 8 gears direct drive system on this machine has been meticulously cleaned, lubricated with Lithium 1.5 grease this grease has very high heat resistance and ability to stick to the moving parts. In the honest attempt to provide The Best possible service /refurbishing available by far better than one can receive in any Sewing Machine Repair Center, I have also completely disassembled. Cleaned and polished all moving parts : gears, slides , rotating hook system , all needle bar, pressure, thread tension mechanisms, the pedal rheostat connections , motor brushes, rotor, stator. I even replaced the original feed dog and installed a brand new heavy duty one to be used with very heavy fabrics , leather. Please see the pics attached to confirm that.
The 201 also has the same as FW 221/222 power cord supply with 3-prong terminal with the separate light switch. All wiring connections to the motor has been checked. Brand new Power and pedal control wiring has been installed.New bobbin winder tire, bulb has been installed. Machine has been completely serviced, lubricated and you can turn the hand wheel so easy with just two fingers because THERE IS NO frictions what-so-ever within all moving parts. It did not spare any time in order to cut the corners If I would tell to you of the amount of time I have spent on this type of meticulous refurbishing you simply would not believe it One who worry about the maximum profit margin would never spend that much time on the machine maintenance first it required through knowledge and the un conditional love to these machines. As the result of all that effort , the machine sews like a brand new one and it is indeed looks almost as good as a brand new machine there are a very few abrasions on the machines body, the gold decal is almost perfect with only a few tiny small and hardly noticeable imperfections. I have replaced the few portions of original decal.
Reverse stitching mechanism and simple quick adjustment of the feed dog by just turning the screw make this machine ready for darning and quilting operations. It is not only highly collectible due to the very good cosmetic condition but is extremely desirable for its outstanding sewing capabilities. With thorough and complete professional maintenance I have provided this machine will continue to provide the best possible service for another 79 years. Just oil it and add some grease within a 3-4 years into those 8 gears.
The machine has been tested to sew both thin and multiple layers of heavy fabrics by using slow , high speed. The motor and direct drive mechanism are working very strong and yet extremely quite.

Chrome plated parts and apply a thin coat of a mixture of Boiled linseed oil & turpentine on the originally painted parts and re-assemble machine. Gear driven machines are being properly cleaned, greased and oiled, the timing is being checked , bobbin case or shuttle are being taken apart, cleaned and oiled for smooth thread draw, stitch adjusted to be equal on both sides.If appropriate for that particular model/class, machine is being tested to sew at slow and fast speeds and in reverse on numerous layers of denim to assure it is sewing with ease. For machines with motor /light /foot pedal control the following steps are being taken to assure that machine is electrically safe to operate: the motor, pedal, light wires, are inspected for electrical safety and replaced (if necessary) from the coils to the connector. The foot pedals are being cleaned and adjusted for smooth speed control.

As the rule , I will place the sewing machines head into the double-box and will use bubble wrap or rags inside the first box. If it would be a treadle or cabinet sewing machine , I will double-box machines head separately. I will disassemble cabinet / irons legs (if appropriate), then I will write the instruction with photo attachment of step-by-step assembly process to avoid any possible confusion during assembly. Or if it would be required, I could even crate the cabinet and will place and secure machine head in the double carton underneath.
I put a lot of effort , time and quality materials into cabinetry restoration process and it would be extremely upsetting to me if the finished piece would be broken during transportation.
